The Captains Drive In 28th March 2015
Club Captain - Tim Roberts-Holmes
Senior Captain - David Symmers Lady Captain - Julie Edwards
2015 Club Captain's message for the new season.
As your new Club Captain for the 2015 /16 season it is a privilege for me to say a few words to introduce the season and welcome both existing and new members to the Club.
On Saturday 28th March we held the Captains Inauguration day. This followed the traditional format of the Drive in, where each of the Captains took their place on the first tee and launched a ball down the first fairway with the aim of landing on it. This was followed by a team competition known as the Silverstone Waltz where teams of four played 18 holes with 1 Players score counting on the first 6 holes, two players scores on the second six and three players on the final six holes. My congratulations to the winning team of Paul Jordan, Simon Gregory, Steve and Gill Pedder. Members then met at the Club House in the evening for what was a thoroughly enjoyable Inauguration Dinner. My thanks to all those members who supported the day.
I am also pleased to announce that this year’s Club Charity will be Medical Detection Dogs. This is a small, local charity that is entirely dependent on public donations to support its work. The Charity trains dogs to help people with life threatening health conditions, giving their “owners” new found confidence, a better quality of life, greater independence and most important of all saving lives on a daily basis. I do hope that you will be able to support this worthwhile cause throughout the year and I would encourage you to find out more by visiting their website http://medicaldetectiondogs.org.uk/
A Charity Golf Day will be held at the Club on Friday 18th September 2015 which I hope many members and their guests will support to raise as much money as possible for this great charity.
For those of you who are considering joining Silverstone, I would encourage you to pay a visit to the Club and experience for yourselves the superb condition of the course that is so well nurtured and maintained by Tony Hunter and his green staff, and experience the warmth and hospitality offered by the members at our Clubhouse. Our resident professional Rodney Holt and his team, is always on hand to offer advice, guidance and lessons.
It only remains for me to wish you a very warm welcome to the season and an enjoyable year’s golf and hope that you will fulfil all your ambitions for the year.
2014 Captain’s Report
I would like to start by thanking all members for their support throughout the year. I have enjoyed the year so far and my golf has actually improved by two strokes as well.
I was glad to see a full turnout for the Inaugural trophy with members showing their support for the four new captains. The weather was good for us (no snow) and then it went on to a great evening.
Captain’s Week was well supported through all events less for the Members and Guests event. This was poorly attended and has been for several years. Because of this, this year it has been moved to a weekend in September. The numbers attending events showed that pair’s formats are entered by more members than singles events which is why, when we can, the committee have put on more pairs events.
It was nice to see that there were many new winners of competitions, some who have surprised even themselves with the scores that they shot. Congratulations to all the winners and those that took part.
I would like to take this chance to thank all of the sections captains, Dick Deller Senior captain and Tracy Bishop Ladies captain, for their support and work during the year Thanks must also go to my Vice-Captain, Tim and all of the members of the Section committees for their help throughout the year. It has made my Captaincy year one I will remember for lots of good reasons.
I would like to thank our Professional Rodney Holt, and his assistant Mark Jordan for all the hard work that they do for the Club. Also to Tony and his team of green keepers for delivering us a course worthy of playing on. Over the last year they have changed the look of the course and are continuing to improve it with a plan of works for this coming year.
One again I would like to say thanks to you all for your support.
Remember that it is the NAB Charity Day for Silverstone Golf club on Friday 20th March. Good luck to all teams that have entered and hope that a lot of money is collected for the final fund raiser of the 2014/2015 season.
Thank you to all members who joined in this day. NAB charity was presented with a cheque for £2,000 which will be added to from the money raised during the Charity day.
Good news for Silverstone Teams
Silverstones Central Sevens Team have got through to the final of the team knock out competition. They knocked out Rye Hill Golf Club at Heythorpe park GC. The team was Brian Cox, Andy Prideaux, Mel Toms, Pete Green and Stuart Holmes. Well done to the team and good luck in the final.
Congratulations to both Rodney Holt (club professional) and Tracy Bishop (ladies captain) took part in the Proffesional/ Ladies 36 Hole foursomes competition on Tuesday 12th August at Calcott Park GC. The pair came first on count back with 146 nett. This is a great result with 32 pairs from around the South of England taking part.
Our Junior team of Seb, Ellis Tiffin (captain) and Alex Sexton took part in the Junior England Club Chapionship at Woodhall Spa on the weekend of 9th/10th August. Unfortunately due to the weather (torrential rain) on Sunday the matches were cancelled with the scores from Saturday only to count. The boys were extremely disappointed with this but came 11th, only four shots behind the winners of Cosby GC. A great achievement to get through to this national event.
Roderick Lloyd Trophy Sunday 2nd August
This is a competition between the men and women at the club, that was first initiated when Alan Roderick and Terry Lloyd were both captains to have a fun competition between the two sections. This year this involved teams of 8 playing a 4 ball betterball competition. After the highly competitive games had finished and the laughter continued, the result was a draw! Well done to all who took part and enjoyed the day.
Captains Trophy Saturday 12th July
It was great to see so many teams involved in the Captains Trophy. 20 teams in total with members from all sections involved. Well done to the overall winners who scored 90 points of Les Bone, Trevor Barnes, John Bradley and Adam Smart.
Dear Fellow Members,
It is with a heavy heart that I have to inform you we lost one of our better players at the club. Dougie Mitchell had a Matchplay game with Cancer and unfortunately he forgot his putter! He lost his short battle last night (Sunday). I am sure that you will all join me in sending our best wishes and a good character will be missed at Silverstone.GC.
**** Dear Members, *****
From Monday the 30th June until Tuesday 8th July, the course will be changed slightly; we will be bringing in the old 17th into play. The10th Hole will be the hole that is not used so when you finish the 9th you will go straight over to the 11th for the back 9.
To all Golf members,
I hope you are have had a good weeks golf during Captains’ week. There have been good turnouts all week for the different competitions, with a great turnout of 90+ attending the Captains’ Rosebowls on Saturday and 60+ in the Captains Shield on Sunday.
Thank you to all who have attended the competitions and well done to those that have won.
Dave Makepeace, Club Captain.
A message from Alan Roderick
I am currently the Members Representative on both the Mens and Steering Committees. My job is to voice members views and problems to the committees. For the Steering Committee, this is for all sections of the club; Juniors, Ladies, Mens and Seniors.
If you would like to get in touch with me, you can either contact me on my email address which is firstname.lastname@example.org or write me a letter/note and put this on mens notice board or give this to Rodney or Mark in the Pro shop. Alternatively, please speak to me in clubhouse when you see me. I will then take to the right committee to sort out and will then get back to you with the reply.
21st June - Well done to Bob Ross who scored a hole in one on the 3rd hole. A great achievement!
11th June - Wednesday evening Members Roll up with a US Open theme....stabelford scores and if you three put you lose all of your previous scores and start again from 0. There was a good turn out for the roll up this week with the good weather and many members feeling the pressure of not three putting on any of the greens. It did create many 18 scores with members stating that it made them focus. A few losing all of their scores on the last three holes which was very frustrating! However, Nick Banyai scored 21pts, followed by the Junior captain Ellis Tiffin and Adam Smart on 20 points. Well done to all the members who turned up and hopefully enjoyed the set up for the evening.
***Captains Week. Saturday 14th June to Saturday 21st June.***

30th May. ***Please note that there is currently a ban on electric trolleys due to the amount of rain that we have had over the past few days. This will continue until further notice***
A note from Brian Cox. SGC Competitions Committee.
It has been brought to the attention of the committee that some members are using uncertified measuring devices in member’s club competitions. Each of the club competitions are run under the rules of golf. The R & A rule 14-3 refers to the use of distance measuring devices and members must play in accordance with this rule.
14-3 Distance-Measuring Devices
A Player may obtain distance information by using a device that measure distances only.
If, during a stipulated round, a player uses a distance-measuring device that is designed to gauge or measure other conditions that might affect his/her play (E.g. gradient, wind speed, temperature, etc ..i.e. a mobile phone)
The player is in breach of rule 14-3, for which the penalty is disqualification, regardless of whether any such additional function is actually used.”
A reminder regarding the ruling about the areas where soil has sunk in drainage channels around the course. There is no relief from these areas and the ball has to be played as it lies
This year the Bader Cup has now been taken off the national calendar of golf competitions. The date's that were originally put in the calendar for the Bader Cup club qualifier, is now going to be a mixed club competition with a similar format to the Bader Cup. A Mixed Greensomes competition will now take place over two dates Friday 6th June or Sunday 8th June. More details are on the noticeboard and we hope to get many members playing in this new competition.
7th May, 2014.
Throughout the winter we did our utmost to keep the driving range open. Unfortunately as a result of this we now have many golf balls plugged in the ground. Next Wednesday (21st May) we will be asking members to come up and help us get as many balls out of the ground/hedges as possible. If you are able to help please let the Proshop know.
Thank you in advance.
Please note that the Winter Rules have been extended to 14th May. This will hopefully give the fairways a little longer to recover from a very wet winter.
Waltzing the Silverstone Way competition went very well on Bank Holiday. There were over 50 entrants this year who all agreed that the format is very enjoyable. Allowing members to play in a fun and competitive way. Thank you to Julie Edwards for organising the competition, sorting out the prizes and collating the results at the end. A great mixed competition that had members from all sections taking part which was great to see.
Well done to Dan Clayton-Drabble for scoring a hole in one on the 16th. Fantastic achievement
- 84 points Alan Roderick Pete Green Julian Baker Jacky Austin
- 80 points Paul Jordan Steve Pedder Eric Husband Yvonne Husband
- 80 points Sue Peacock S. Peacock Rob Bacon Richard Wall

Roger Smith won the ‘How many sweets in the jar? 48 sweets . £17.50 raised for the Captains’ charity
Note of another competition - Silverstone Mens Open Four Ball Team Event on Thursday 12th June being run by the Pro-Shop. Please sign up on the board and see Rodney or Mark for details.
Waltzing the Silverstone Way - Bank Holiday Monday 5th May. This is a mixed competition run by the ladies for all members. Tee times are from 8.30am and will be drawn. Please sign up on the sheet if you would like to take part in this fun competition. Entry fee £3.00 per person
Wednesday 30th May - 9 hole roll up - This week the roll up was on the back 9 which many were looking forward to the change. In the past few weeks the roll up has been dominated by the men but not this week; the ladies got their revenge. There was also a few incidents that need to be noted. Will not wanting Dave to win 2 weeks on the trot, tried to take Dave's clubs out using the buggy. As Dave said "Its a bit difficult to produce the high standard if your clubs are bent!" A little bit of an exageration but did give the group something to laugh about! If you want to be in the winning group, tactic is to go out with Natalie as she has been part of the winners in the last couple of weeks! Winner - Natalie Toms 26pts, 2nd - Paula Batchelor 20 pts, 3rd - Charmaine Locke 18pts (on count back) 4th Nige(ella) James 18pts. Thank you all members for turning up to the roll up and making these evenings great fun and successful and a big thank you to Rodney for organising these evenings again. 28 members this week.
A note from our Green keepers to all members...
Please can all players repair any divots that are made on the greens. At present, a lot time is being spent by the greenkeepers at the beginning of the day repairing and rolling the greens because of the number of divots left on our greens.
I am sure that we would all agree that our greens are playing very well and it is a shame that some players are not taking the time to repair their divots and spoil play for others.
St Georges Day 9 hole roll up Wednesday 23rd April
Despite the wet weather there were still 20 members at the St Georges Day Wednesday 9 hole roll up. Thank you to all the members who joined in the competition; it is great to see members supporting this event and hopefully the weather will improve as we get closer to summer. The Dragon hole was the 8th hole. Well done to Dave who won the competition, scoring 27 points in the windy and wet conditions.
Wednesday Night 9 Hole Roll up.
These have started well and each week are increasing in number. Food is now available but must be ordered before you go out to play please. Hopefully the sun will continue to shine which may help our golf to improve....
Easter Weekend, 18th, 19th, 20th and 21st April.
There are various competitions that are taking place over the weekend. Please make sure that you sign up for these if necessary and book your tee times. Lets keep our fingers crossed that the recent good weather continures.
Inauguration and Captains Drive off Saturday 29th March.
What a fantastic day for all of the 120 members involved in the Inauguration Competition. The sun shone throughout for all members to enjoy both the company and golf during the morning. A big thank you must go to Tony and the other greenkeepers for the condition of the course. Also for Jim and Tony who came around the course providing welcome refreshments for all members as the temperature began to get a little higher.
Well done to the Junior Captain, Ellis Tiffin who managed to hit the furthest drive of all of the captains with a drive of 268yds. All of the captains seemed to have a little problem hitting their drive on to the fairway apart from the Lady Captain, Tracy Bishop who managed this first time of asking (all the rest unfortunately took 3 attempts!).
Winning Team - Nigel James, Steve Tiffin, Dan Drabble and Scott Barnes. 80pts
Second Team - Dougie Mitchell, Andy Smart, Charlie Crowe and Brian Cox. 79pts
Third Team - John Bradley, Adam Smart, Les Bone and Trevor Barnes. 79pts
Fourth Team - Steve Skinner, Pete Green, Matt Bishop and Alan Roderick. 77pts
